How it works

1Choose your foodSelect your food, starting condition, thickness and air fryer style.
2Check as you cookGet a starting time and temperature, then check for doneness a little early.
3Save what workedKeep notes on your times, temps and results so the next batch is easier.

Why the times here are ranges

Air fryers are small convection ovens: a heating element sits above the basket and a fan pushes hot air around the food. Two fryers set to the same temperature can still cook at different speeds, because fan power, basket size and how close the food sits to the element all vary. A crowded basket also cooks slower, since the air can't reach every surface.

That's why every time on Air Fry Toolkit is a check window, not a promise. Start checking at the low end, then add a minute or two at a time. For meat, poultry and fish, the only reliable test is an internal temperature reading in the thickest part. Colour and clear juices are not dependable signs.

The times assume a preheated fryer and food spread in a single layer. If you cook from cold, add 2–3 minutes. If you double the amount of food in the basket, cook in batches or expect it to take longer and shake more often.

Canadian and US temperatures

Health Canada and the USDA agree on most foods, such as 74°C / 165°F for chicken and 71°C / 160°F for ground beef. They differ on a few. Health Canada lists 71°C / 160°F for pork chops and 70°C / 158°F for fish, while the USDA lists 63°C / 145°F for both, with a 3-minute rest for pork. Where they differ, we show both so you can follow the guidance where you live. The temperature guide has the full list.

Common questions

Do I need to preheat my air fryer?

Most foods turn out crisper with a 3–5 minute preheat, and our times assume one. Frozen snacks are forgiving if you skip it. See when preheating matters.

How do I convert an oven recipe?

A common starting point is about 15°C (25°F) cooler and roughly 20% less time. The oven converter does the maths and tells you when to check.

Are my cooking notes private?

Yes. Notes are saved in your own browser on your device. Nothing is sent to us, and there is no account to create.

Why does my food come out soggy?

Usually too much food in the basket, wet food going in, or no shake halfway. Pat food dry, leave gaps, and use a light coat of oil.
